Being a vegetatively reproduced crop, potatoe is considerably affected by virus-borne degeneration. There is a 40-50% yield decrease just due to 7 most widely-spread viruses. Viral degeneration occurs in 15-20 years and a potatoe cultivar completely loses its productivity characters.
A biotechnological method to increase potatoes productivity characters using bacterial nucleases was worked out at the Institute of Cytology and Genetics, and a virus- and fungus-free potatoe genepool collection was established on its basis.
Based on this collection, potatoe genepool preservation and cultivars productivity are realised by means of growing virus-free seed roots. На основе этой коллекции обеспечивается сохранение генофонда картофеля и продуктивность сортов за счет выращивания здорового семенного материала.

Botanic-Productional Characters of the Basic Regionalised and Prospective West-Siberian Potatoe Cultivars

Charodei - mid-early, high yield; oval and white-pulped roots, relatively resistant to Colorado potatoe beetle, phytophthora, drought and has non-fragile shoots.

Yelizaveta - mid-early, high yield; oval and cream-pulped roots, relatively resistant to phytophthora and scab, very high consumption properties.

Nikulinskyv - mid-late, high yield; white, roundish, cream-pulped roots, resistant to phytophthora, potatoe bug and drought, high starch content, tasty.

Zhavoronok - early, high yield; white, oval and slightly cream-pulped roots, high starch content and gastronomic properties.

Snegir - early, good gastronomic properties; short, oval-shaped, pink and white-pulped roots.

Aspiya - mid, resistant to nematode; roundish-oval, white, with pink hollows and white-pulped roots, good gastronomic properties.

Atlantic - mid, high yield; roundish-oval roots with dark-yellow peels and white pulp, resistant to nematode, scab and phytophthora, very good for making chips.

Alena - early, oval, red and white-pulped roots; relatively resitant to phytophthorosis, high gastronomic properties, good for making free-potatoe.

Technical-Economic Advantages

Only growing virus-free potatoe seed roots increases yield performance 2-3-fold under all the rest equal conditions heightening their commodity output ratio and gastronomic properties.

For 1 year we are able to eliminate viruses in your potatoe cv if we have not got it in our collection.

Level and Location of Practical Realisation

Having a big collection of potatoe cvs (200 cvs) of homeland and overseas breeding, the Institute of Cytology and Genetics, SB RAS, is capable of supplying scientific institutions, seed-farming units, farms and individual amateurs with initial virus-free seed roots necessary for primary seed root- farming.

Ground to include the work-out in the number of generally advertised objects of the SB RAS. 
The scientific-technical work-out Virus-Free Potatoe Seed Root-Farming, ICG, SB RAS, was demonstrated at the continuous exhibition of SB RAS work-outs in 1999-2001 and its advertising descriprion was published in the exhibition's catalogue - Completed Scientific-Research Construction Work-Outs of the SB RAS in 1998. However, it is expedient to include the work-out in the number of SB RAS generally advertised objects due to the following reasons: 

1. For the last 3 years the work-out was sold as commodity based on 2 delivery agreements of basic potatoe roots for seed-farming to 2 agricultural enterprises of the region. 
2. For the by-gone year there have been 4 proposals for negotiations on deliveries of basic potatoe roots for seed-farming from 4 agricultural units of the region; 
3. As for other reasons, it is necessary to deliver high-quality basic potatoe roots for the regional seed-farming units.
