Transgenic plants

Description

New ways of transferring biologically active medical agents into organisms of the warm-blooded using transgenic plants the genome of which has built-in genes controlling synthesis of the corresponding products are being worked out at the Institute of Cytology and Genetics in co-operation with the Novosibirsk Institute of Bio-organic Chemistry, SB RAS. 
Interleukins (IL-1, IL-18) are substances providing signal transmission among the cells of immune system. 
Genes of interleukins IL-10, IL-4 and IL-18 have been cloned. 
Recombinant gene IL-10 has been expressed in Ecoli and purified till homogenic condition (>97%) using affinity chromatography. The obtained preparation is biologically active and shows immunochemical characters similar to those of native gene IL-10. 
Genetic constructions including gene npt-II providing the resistance to kanamycin and gene IL-10 managed by 35S-promoter of cauliflower mosaic virus. The obtained expression cassettes were transferred to tobacco plants with the method of agrobacterial transformation. Investigations of immunochemical characters are being conduced in the developed transgenic plants.

Technical-Economic Advantages

A scientifically grounded conception for developing transgenic plants, super-producers of heterological medical proteins, including the immonogenic, has been worked out. The developed transgenic plants could be used as cytokin (interleukin) producers of valuable medicinal preparations.

    Transgenic plants-producers of immunogenic proteins - can be used as "edible vaccines" in medicine and veterinary for heightening the resistance to different diseases in human and animals.
