Immune common wheat analogues of cultivar Saratovskaya 29 with complex disease resistance

A widely known strong drought-resistant common wheat cv Saratovskaya 29 having been cultivated for a long time in different agroclimatic zones and being currently used in breeding is affecetd by all kinds of fungi diseases. Brown leaf rust which considerably affects wheats during epiphytotic years decreases yield performance and worsens food grain quality is one of the most wide-spread wheat diseases. Genes for resistance to leaf rust races (Lr), stem rust (Sr) and powdery mildew (Pm) absent in cv Sratovskaya 29 were introgressed in it. Synthetic hexaploid wheat AAGGDD produced by Dr. Savov, Bulgaria was immunity donor. It includes species T. timopheevii - AAGG-genome (Sweden) and T. tauschii - DD-genome (Bulgaria). As a result, analogues of wheat cv S 29 different in their earliness and disease resistant in field sowings and artificial infection after 8-9 backcrosses. Disease affection was estimated according to the 4-score scale by Mains-Jackson. Populations of immune analogues consisted mainly of plants on whose leaves single pustules with minor affection or their absence were observed (0). Under artificial infection mature plants BC5F3 (KILF) were resistant to leaf rust races 15, 25, 17, 192 and stem rust races 11, 17, 21, 34, 40 and 117 . Under natural epiphytotic development of powdery mildew and brown rust (Novosibirsk, experimental plot of ICG, SB RAS), cv S 29 and others were maximally affected by these diseases (4 scores), and immune analogues of the different backcrossed were estmated as resistant to diseases with the affection type (0 scores).

Commonn wheat disease reistance contributes to photosynthesis and grain-filling, preventing leaves early drying. It considerably improves grain seed and food properties (qualities). Thus, under the field conditions of 2001, grain quality index was higher in immune analogues than in cv S 29, i.e. in 1000 grain weight - 8.5%, total glassiness - 4.8%, grain wet gluten content - 12.7%, average diameter of flour particles - 10.5%.

Technical-Economic Advantages

The produced immune analogues of strong wheat cv Saratovskaya 29 are unique due to their simultaneous resistance to 3 kinds of fungi diseases. They can be used in breeding as donors when developing both new, disease-resistant cvs competitive in the world market and directly for agricultural production in the regionalisation zone of cv S 29 after necessary seed reproduction. The obtained analogues not only preserved the properties of strong common wheat cv S 29 but acquired complex disease resistance.
