Using plant anti-pathogenic protection is bionet/required for effective cultivation of agricultural crops and yield preservation. Currently predominating chemical protective preparations have become a serious factor of environmental and food-stuffs pollution. Working out and use of ecologically clean anti-pathogenic methods in agricultural crops is topical. 
Cell walls of the most of these pathogenic micro-organisms have considerable amounts of chitin - a polysaccharide mainly providing their resistance to external impacts. In this connection, using chitinases - enzymes catalyzing decomposition of chitin molecules - is believed to be prospective. 
Bacteria Serratia marcesens are one of the most productive sources of chitinases. Stable mutant strain S. marcescens M-1, a super-producer of chitinase being active to 1.8 u/ml of medium, has been obtained by us. 
New economical conditions in cultivating this strain for maximal accumulation of the enzyme in cultural liquid have been matched. Preparation of chitinase has been established and described. 
Fungi-static activity of the enzyme's preparation has been tested. It is shown that in tested concentrations chitinase impedes germination process of spores Fusarium solani, a dangerous pathogene for cotton diseases, at 50-60% in three days of growth.

Technical-Economic Advantages

The major advantages of bacterial chitinase based on mutant strain S. marcescens M-1:

  • approximate price of the suggested preparation is considerably lower than that of analogues distributed by different firms;

  • the preparation of chitinase both proper and combined with fungicide preparations is prospective and ecologically safe for biological control of phytopathogenic fungi;

  • can be used in other fields of national economy as a protective component from pests of agricultural and forest crops, also in processing chitin-containing wastes in fishery.
