Shumny V.K. was born on February 12, 1934 in the Ukrainia. In 1958 he graduated from the Moscow State University with the "genetics" speciality. Since June 1958 he has been working in the Institute of Cytology and Genetics Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences. He is the author and co-author of 240 scientific papers on plant genetics. His scientific interests lie in the study of heterosis mechanism, remote hybridization in crops, obtaining transgenic plants and the study of their levels of hostile genes expression. He is a Head of Laboratory of Plants Heterosis The main research results of V.K.Shumny:

• - models of monohybrid heterosis in plants displaying steadily the super dominant effects are obtained;
• - as a result of interspecific hybridization of crops unique combinations of barley-rye and barley-wheat hybrids are obtained, as well as alloplasmatic and additional lines;
• - transgenic plants of tobacco and lucerne with beta-interferone gene are obtained;
• - a unique collection of Siberian plant species as genetic donors of new features for genetic and selective programs is created.
